Jason joined the band after Cliff Burton died. Metallica chose him from among 40+ applicants. Though many people still think of him as a just a replacement for Cliff in the band, there is no doubt that most fans and the rest of the band view him as a part of Metallica. After all, he has been in the band longer and for more albums than Cliff. In 2002, he left the band because the other members discouraged him from working on side projects even though Metallica was not moving forward with anything.
