Review: Live Shit: Binge & Purge

My Rating: 7

My notes/review:

I have Binge & Purge and I think that it is worth it if you are a big Metallica fan. The 72 page book is both funny and somewhat interesting. It gives some insight into what touring really is like. The videos (6 hours: 2.5 hours from Seattle '89 and 3.5 hours from San Diego '92) are fun to watch (once at least). The 3 CD's (3 hours) are from Mexico City '93 are great to listen to. They have songs such as "So What" that aren't listed on the track list. Also the box contains a stencil of the Binge & Purge logo and a replica Pit Pass.

The box set was released originally in 1993 and the videos were on VHS. In 2002, the re-released Binge & Purge as a smaller box set with 2 DVDs instead of 3 VHS tapes. The DVD box set also does not come with the book - the book is included as a PDF on the second DVD. It still comes with the pit pass and the stencil, though the stencil is smaller than the original one. The VHS box set costs $65 and the DVD box set costs $40.

The sound quality is great. This box set really shows what a great live band Metallica is. I am giving it a lower score than Metallica's studio albums since there is nothing new on this album. Also, the songs sound different live which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. I like going to their concerts but, when just sitting around, I usually prefer listening to the studio versions of the songs.

In the end, this is a great buy - but only if you're a huge fan. Most people would be better off spending their money on the studio albums. For $40 you could get at least 3 of their albums.
