Uses of NutraSweet

Aspartame has become the most popular sweetener in the USA. It has been marketed as a sugar substitute that will help people reduce their calorie intake and thus lose weight. It appears to be useful for people who are trying to lose weight or who are on a special diet because they are diabetic and can't have a lot of glucose.

Aspartame is found in many products, including:

  • Cereals
  • Chewing gum
  • Diet soft drinks
  • Fruit juice beverages
  • Jell-O
  • Flavored Milk
  • Breath Mints
  • Table top sweeteners (Equal)
  • Wine coolers
  • Yogurt
  • Vitamins
  • Pudding
  • Hard Candy
  • Chocolate
  • Laxatives
  • Ice cream
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa mixes
  • Pharmeceuticals

This is just a short list. Aspartame can be found in many more products, especially in products marked "diet" or "sugar-free". It should be listed in the "Ingredients" on the label. In addition, many products containing the sweetener will have the following label or one similar to it:

Recently, researchers have found possible medical uses for aspartame. In 1998, researchers at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation found that aspartame could be used as a pain-reliever, anticoagulant, and fever-reducer much like a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin. You can read more about this discovery at OMRF's webpage.

These are the main uses and positive applications of aspartame. Unfortunately, the positives are out weighed by the negatives. There are many side effects to aspartame ingestion.
