PC (DOS) Version

You can learn much about the PC version by reading about the differences between it and the Macintosh version and the history and technology info. I will say a few things about the PC version of the game.

The game is a DOS based game; since it is not Windows native, you may trouble running it on NT-based operating systems (Windows 2000/XP). I have no trouble running it on Windows 98 (a DOS-based operating system), but have had problems with getting the music to work on Windows XP. Others have reported problems with using joysticks with the game. One work-around for WindowsXP users is to run Wolfenstein 3d through a DOS emulator such as DOSBox.

Naturally, dificulty of the game changes as you switch between the 4 dificulty levels; however, the game is not impossible (when compared to newer games) on any of the levels. It is extremely hard on the most difficult level. The difficulty level affects the number of enemies and the amount of damage taken; so, while the number of enemies can get numerous on the hardest difficulty setting, their lack of intelligence and the lack of random spawning keeps it from being too hard.

3 versions of the PC game are available: the shareware version, the "full" version, and the real full version. The shareware version only allows you to play the first episode. The "full" version contains the first 3 episodes. The real full version allows you start on any of the 6 episodes. Episodes 4 to 6 are the prequel known as Wolfenstein 3D: The Nocturnal Missions. The full version is no longer made, but it can be easily purchased from places like eBay for just a few dollars. The full version of Wolfenstein 3D is also included with Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Game of the Year Edition.
